Volunteer Thai divers remove nets that break coral and devastate reefs

Jasmine Tse

In the Ko Losin, a marine protected area off the coast of Thailand’s southern Pattani province, volunteer divers have conducted a two-day operation to remove abandoned fishing nets that covered coral reefs. The nets measuring 2,750 square metres (29,600 sq ft) had been lodged in the reefs for about a month and a half before the removal action in June 2021. The volunteers from SOS Group said they go out on at least five such expeditions each year.
