At least 8,000 ethnic Karen people have fled their homes to escape an offensive by Myanmar’s military. The displaced villagers are now living in the forest under new security threats and food shortages, a humanitarian group said.
The Karen National Union was one of 10 ethnic armed groups that signed a ceasefire with the government and Myanmar’s military, which has repeatedly breached the agreement. Aid groups describe the latest army offensive as the worst breach in nearly a decade.
