Climate change threatening homes in Mumbai

Lowland cities and islands such as the Indian city of Mumbai may face increasingly frequent floods and storms as global sea levels continue to rise in the coming centuries, according to a UN report released on September 25, 2019.

Sea levels could rise up to one metre (3.28ft) by 2100 if carbon emissions go unchecked, said the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate report from the UN body, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

While residents in Mumbai’s slums worry about losing their homes to climate change, local governments have focused on protecting the west coast city by building a natural sea wall with hundreds of thousands of mangrove trees.
