Zohran Mamdani was elected to the position of mayor of New York City in November 2025, after running as the Democratic Party nominee. A member of the Democratic Socialists of America, Mamdani campaigned on a string of politicies aimed at improving the lives of the city's working classes, including free buses, rent freezes and creating a network of city-owned grocery stores. However, his left-wing politics, his Muslim faith and his opposition to Israel's war in Gaza made national and international headlines. His victory was seen by many as a victory for those on the Democratic Party's left wing.
