A distinguished microbiologist, physician and surgeon, he is the Henry Fok Professor of Infectious Diseases at the University of Hong Kong and co-director of the State Key Laboratory of Emerging Infectious Diseases. He played a pivotal role in identifying the SARS coronavirus in 2003 and has discovered over 100 novel microbial species. His work involves researching emerging infectious diseases, including coronaviruses and influenza and he advised the Hong Kong government during the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2025 he warned about the severity of Chikungunya fever. He is a highly cited researcher and recipient of the Gold Bauhinia Star.
