72-year-old Jia is chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. The Hebei native spent 11 years in Fujian province between 1985 and 1996 where he was the province’s vice party boss, governor and then party boss. He became the mayor of Beijing in 1996 before being appointed Beijing party boss the following year. He was a member of the Politburo Standing Committee between 2002 and 2012.
