China has lofty ambitions for the home-grown production of civil aviation aircraft. After more than two decades of work, the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (Comac) has put two types of civilian jets in the air – the ARJ21 small aircraft and the C919 narrowbody aircraft. Two bigger passenger planes are on the drawing board – the C929 widebody aircraft and the C939 jumbo aircraft – but are not expected to be in service for at least a few years.
