China’s Huawei Technologies and US personal computer giant HP announced on Wednesday that they had reached a deal to license each other’s Wi-fi patents.
The two companies signed a multi-year global patent cross-licensing agreement, which granted HP the right to use certain Huawei Wi-fi patents on its PCs for a fee.
“This agreement is a strong testament to Huawei’s persistent independent innovation in cutting-edge fields in information and communications technology,” said Alan Fan, Huawei’s chief intellectual property (IP) officer, in a statement.
“Through patent licensing, Huawei shares its innovation with the industry, particularly in the area of standardised technologies.”
The agreement came after Huawei filed a lawsuit against HP in 2025 over Wi-fi 6 patents, but the disputes were resolved in November last year after the American PC maker became a licensee of the patent pool of Italian intellectual property management firm Sisvel, gaining access to some of the contested patents.

“This is a standard-essential patent licence covering Wi-fi technology – something used broadly across the industry and routine for companies whose products connect to Wi-fi,” HP said in a statement on Wednesday, adding it did not indicate a deeper strategic or commercial partnership with Huawei.
Standard-essential patents cover technologies required in products to comply with technical industry standards, such as Wi-fi and 5G.
Huawei has been pushing for the monetisation of its vast patent portfolio spanning from telecommunications to audio and video technologies, as it seeks to generate returns on its continuous investments in research and development.
The Shenzhen-based firm invested 192.3 billion yuan (US$28.6 billion) into research and development in 2025, accounting for nearly 22 per cent of its total revenue, according to Huawei’s annual report. One of the world’s largest patent holders, Huawei had 165,000 active granted patents in its portfolio as of 2025.
In 2022, Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei urged the company’s IP team to step up efforts to turn its vast pool of patents into revenue via “reasonable pricing” and to “generate an appropriate return” on the R&D investments.
Huawei has expanded the influence of its IP through over 260 licensing deals with major global tech firms including Nokia, Samsung and Amazon, alongside domestic smartphone rivals like Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi, according to the company.
The firm generated more than US$630 million in patent licensing in 2024, according to Huawei. Since it was founded, the company has paid out nearly three times the amount of royalties it received.
In June, Huawei announced that it would start charging royalties for its Wi‑fi 7 technologies, the newest wireless standard, with the rate set at US$0.5 per unit. A key player in Wi-fi licensing, Huawei’s patent licensing deals covered 1.6 billion devices globally by the end of 2025, the firm said.
