The Jack Ma Foundation said on Thursday it would donate HK$30 million (US$3.9 million) to support families, firefighters and rescuers affected by a deadly fire at a housing estate in Hong Kong’s Tai Po district.
In a statement, the foundation – established by the founder of Alibaba Group Holding and Ant Group – expressed solidarity with all those affected by the tragedy. Alibaba owns the South China Morning Post.
The donation follows a further commitment of HK$20 million from Alibaba and HK$10 million from Ant, bringing their total contribution to HK$60 million and making them the largest contributors among Chinese tech giants in providing financial assistance to victims of the fire, which has killed at least 75 people, including a firefighter.
The Jack Ma Foundation extended its condolences to the victims’ families and praised the bravery of the firefighters and emergency personnel.

Alibaba said it had released the first phase of its donation to support rescue efforts and temporary shelters, and to provide essential materials. The company also activated its emergency response mechanism, with its logistics unit Cainiao delivering clothing and food for those in need.
Ant said the first part of its donation would be dedicated to aiding those affected by the fire, in partnership with its Hong Kong subsidiary AlipayHK. The company has also introduced a pop-up feature in its app to facilitate user donations.
Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu has ordered inspections of all public housing estates in Hong Kong undergoing major renovations, as authorities launched a criminal investigation into the deadliest fire in the city in decades.
Rescue operations were still ongoing as of Thursday afternoon, as flames receded into the upper floors of three residential blocks and nearly 280 people remained unaccounted for. Some 70 people were sent to hospital.
The eight residential buildings in Wang Fuk Court had been undergoing renovations since July last year. They were wrapped in mesh netting that did not meet fire safety standards, according to government officials.
