As China’s southern tech hub Shenzhen gears up to host November’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit, its province, Guangdong, is making sure its technological prowess is also receiving global attention.
At Saturday’s Asia-Pacific Media Forum, a major media gathering before the summit, a hall was packed with hi-tech products from the province, including a BYD car, DJI drones and Tencent Holdings’ artificial intelligence products, as well as smartphones from Honor and Vivo.
Before the main forum, media representatives joined two-day tours across six cities in Guangdong, visiting the headquarters and factories of provincial poster children including BYD, electronic appliance maker Midea Group and smartphone giant Oppo.
The South China Morning Post took part in the visit to BYD, the world’s top electric car maker in terms of deliveries, in eastern Shenzhen.
The company showcased its latest new energy and automotive technology, charging a Denza Z9GT premium sedan to a range of 700km (435 miles) within about six minutes at minus 30 degrees Celsius (minus 22 degrees Fahrenheit).
Outside the office building, a Yangwang U9 super-coupe showcased its quad-motor all-wheel-drive system by rotating 360 degrees on the spot.

Other firms in Shenzhen and neighbouring cities – including Midea in Foshan and Oppo in Dongguan – displayed the digitally enabled smart features of their products.
The province’s Communist Party secretary Huang Kunming said at Saturday’s forum that the province had benefited from the “unique advantage” of its closeness to Hong Kong and Macau as it faced the Asia-Pacific region, becoming a “vanguard” of China’s reform and opening-up.
In the first half of this year, Guangdong’s trade with other Apec economies surged 21 per cent to nearly 3.6 trillion yuan (US$536.3 billion), accounting for 65 per cent of its total imports and exports, according to official data.
Shenzhen will become the third Chinese city to host an Apec Economic Leaders’ Meeting, following Shanghai in 2001 and Beijing in 2014.
Preparations for the summit, scheduled for November 18 and 19, are proceeding apace, with slogans including “Shenzhen in action” and “Let’s gather in Shenzhen for a prosperous Asia-Pacific Region” a regular presence in city scenery.
The event may see a trilateral meeting between President Xi Jinping, United States President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to Yuri Ushakov, a key foreign policy adviser to the Kremlin.
Putin confirmed his intention to attend the Apec meeting four months ago, but Trump has not yet done so.
