Jannik ⁠Sinner’s bid for a maiden French Open title and career grand ‌slam went up in smoke as he experienced physical issues in his second-round match against ⁠Juan Manuel Cerundolo and fell ‌to a 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1 ‌defeat on a scorching ⁠Thursday.
Sinner ⁠won the opening two sets ‌with ease and was up 5-1 ‌in ‌the third set before ‌dropping three games and ⁠asking for medical treatment off ⁠the court, only to lose two straight ‌sets before ‌going down in the decider.
Sinner was on a 30-match winning streak stretching back to February and the odds were overwhelming he would win the only big title missing in his tennis career – especially with two-time reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz out because of an injured right wrist.
In an earlier match, Sinner’s 10th seed compatriot Flavio Cobolli beat China’s Wu Yibing 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 to reach the third round for the second ‌year straight.
With Wu’s exit, the only Chinese player left in the singles draw is women’s world No 148 Wang Xiyu, who in the third round faces Ukraine’s Yuliia Starodubtseva, conqueror of second seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan on Wednesday.

In the women’s section, former world No 1 Naomi ⁠Osaka made another dazzling ⁠entry at Roland Garros, but she was made to work hard to avoid the exit door in a 7-6, 6-4 victory over ‌Croatian Donna Vekic in the second round.
Osaka, who wore a sequinned waistcoat blouse and black mesh train over her layered yellow-brown and gold match dress in the opening round, arrived for the contest with ⁠Vekic in a white floor-length flared train over her outfit.
On ‌another blazing day in Paris, the Japanese player traded breaks freely with Vekic in the ‌opening set on Court Simonne Mathieu, before finding her ⁠best form ⁠during the tiebreak to prevail for the loss of only one point.
Down a set, Paris Olympics silver medallist Vekic began to deploy a series ‌of drop ‌shots to trouble Osaka early in the second set ‌but her challenge fizzled out as she surrendered her ⁠serve in the ninth game.
Osaka saved a break point in ⁠the next game to close out the win in one hour and 50 minutes, reaching the third ‌round for the ‌first time since 2019.
“I like to keep people on their toes and I think it’s really fun,” Osaka said in her post-match interview on court, refusing to reveal if she has a new outfit for every possible match of the tournament. “There’s a community I feel like that’s been built over my on-court outfits. So I just like to just keep you guys guessing.”
Osaka will face 16th seed Iva Jovic in the third round, after the American beat compatriot Emma Navarro 6-0 6-3 earlier. This is the first time she has reached the third round at Roland Garros since 2019.
“It means a lot,” she said. “I just feel so grateful. It’s another milestone.”
“Athletes are in show business,” Osaka said after beating Laura Siegemund in her opener. “Grand slam walk-ons are the only time that I possibly feel like I’m an entertainer.”

Osaka walk-ons ‘problematic’
Siegemund said Osaka’s walk-ons were “yet another example of big names being treated differently” in tennis.
Siegemund told Eurosport Germany she did not mind the outfits but found it “a bit problematic” that it took Osaka so long to get ready and lesser-known players were under pressure to unpack their gear as fast as possible to avoid time violations.
“I came here to play tennis, not to put on a fashion show,” Siegemund added after losing to Osaka. “If other people want to do a fashion show, they can do that. It’s fine for me.”
