Hong Kong tennis star Coleman Wong Chak-lam was made to wait for his second grand slam main draw appearance after he fell at the last French Open qualifying hurdle on Thursday.
Wong, who will turn 22 in the first week of June, was beaten in three sets by Juan Carlos Prado Angelo, going down 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in two hours and 21 minutes.
After dropping his opening two service games, Wong clawed back one break but Prado Angelo survived a 10th game of nine deuces to clinch the opening set.
In a topsy-turvy second, two three-game winning streaks from Wong sandwiched one identical run from his Bolivian opponent.
World No 113 Wong managed the first break of the decider to lead 2-1, but the 21-year-old Prado Angelo, a junior French Open runner-up in 2023, duly reeled off four straight games, before staving off one break point in the ninth to advance to round one.
Wong has played in the main draw of a grand slam once in his young career, reaching last year’s US Open third round, where he lost to Andrey Rublev in a thrilling five-set match.
In Thursday’s draw all eyes were on men’s world No 1 Jannik Sinner after defending champion Carlos Alcaraz withdrew because of a wrist injury.

Currently on the fifth-longest ATP winning streak in the Open Era, with 29 consecutive victories dating back to Indian Wells in March, the Italian star could become only the seventh man to complete the coveted career grand slam - winning all four majors at least once.
The 24-year-old will begin his title run in Paris against French wild card Clement Tabur. The 26-year-old Tabur made his main draw debut in his home grand slam last year, going down in straight sets to compatriot Corentin Moutet.
Sinner, who holds a 22-6 career record at the tournament, has not lost in the first round in six outings.
China’s Wu Yibing will take on Marcos Giron of the United States while compatriot Zhang Zhizhen will face a qualifier.
In the women’s singles, reigning champion Coco Gauff and world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka, were placed in the top half of the draw, meaning there will be no repeat of last year’s final.
Gauff will take on fellow American Taylor Townsend in the first round. Sabalenka, who has won the Australian Open and the US Open twice each, will play Spain’s Jessica Bouzas, with a potential fourth-round tie against four-time grand slam champion Naomi Osaka in the offing.
Chinese Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen, who will face a qualifier, is in the same top-half bracket as compatriot Zhang Shuai, who is poised for a first-round date with Ann Li of the United States.

Four-time champion Iga Swiatek and world No 2 Elena Rybakina headlined the bottom half of the draw. Set to begin against 17-year-old Australian Emerson Jones, Swiatek could face 2017 champion Jelena Ostapenko in the third round, followed by potential ties against Marta Kostyuk and Elina Svitolina. Kazakh Rybakina was handed a first-round match against Veronika Erjavek of Slovenia.
Chinese world No 32 Wang Xinyu has Austrian Lilli Tagger in her path as she tries to emulate or surpass her career-best third-round effort on the Roland Garros clay. Compatriot Wang Xiyu could join the main draw if she gets past Uzbek Polina Kudermetova in her final qualifier on Friday.
