In tribute to the American tennis legend, Britain’s Jack Draper sported Andre Agassi-inspired Nike after at the US Open – though joked that the shoes would stay off his feet during serious play.
Draper, world No 25, gave a nod to the tennis icon after his straight-sets quarter-final victory over Australia’s Alex de Minaur in the early hours of Thursday.
Before his on-court victory interview, the British tennis star slipped off his game shoes and laced up a pair of bright “hot lava” coloured Agassi Nike Air Tech Challenge IIs, reminiscent of the eight-time grand slam champion’s trademark look in the 1990s.
“I don’t know how the hell he (Agassi) moved with these shoes,” Draper said. “Honestly, I can’t imagine sliding in these.”
As a follow-up, the Briton was asked if he had ever competed while donning the Agassi classics.
“Absolutely no chance,” he confessed.
