Hong Kong Sevens: city’s new girl ‘just started crying’ in response to surprise call-up
Jamie Bourk earns selection only months after turning full-time, aiming to show local girls ‘what’s possible’ on tournament debut

A “surprised and very happy” Jamie Bourk burst into tears when she learned of her Hong Kong selection for this week’s Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens.
The inclusion of Bourk, who made her international debut last May, was the only change from a slightly disappointing Challenger Series campaign this month.
Vivian Poon Hoi-yan has dropped out, with head coach Andy Vilk making the switch to cater for the “squad dynamic in terms of positions and roles”.
Whatever the reason, the news astonished Bourk, who only began playing rugby full-time at the beginning of the year.
“I found out last Friday night, I was never expecting the call and just started crying,” Bourk said. “I’m new to the team, so I’m surprised and very happy. [Vice-captain] Chloe Chan sent me a message saying, ‘OMG’. I couldn’t believe it.”
Bourk, who plays for Football Club (HKFC), was invited to train with the city’s sevens squad in the first half of last year. After quickly making a positive impression, she reduced her delivery consultant day job to part-time hours.
