It’s Sunday, and you know what that means.
The 2022 Hong Kong Sevens is back for day 3 – the final day of competition. And don’t worry, the Post has got you covered with all the colour and competition from the stadium.
The action will get under way at 9.45am local time, with New Zealand against Kenya in the Plate quarter-finals, followed by Spain vs Uruguay (10.10am), Canada vs Hong Kong (10.35am), and Great Britain vs Japan at 11am.
The last eight of the Cup then kicks off at 11.25am with surprise package Samoa against Argentina, followed by Fiji vs South Africa (11.50am), Ireland vs Australia (12.15pm), and France vs the United States (12.40pm).



Let’s do it all again

The teams are out at Hong Kong Stadium.
Let’s give some props to the hardy souls who have turned up for the first game at 9.45am, after what has been a big couple of days for most of us. There are a smattering of them in the stands already, and that crowd will only get bigger.
New Zealand, a surprise casualty from the main Cup competition, will look to end the weekend on a high by winning the Plate. First up for the Kiwis are Kenya, though, and they are no pushovers.



Here we go

It feels a little odd for New Zealand – 11-time winners of this tournament – to have breakfast-time billing, rattling around in a near-empty stadium in this first match.
That’s what came their way after their pool-stage losses to Samoa and Australia denied them their usual place in the Cup quarter-finals, which come later.
Kenya are no slouches, but the All Blacks are playing like some pride is at stake, and romp home 41-0.
That’s done a decent job of warming up the crowd.



Early-bird Kiwis

Hong Kong are going to take to the field in a few minutes to face Canada. The crowd may be a little light this morning, but they are bringing the energy. Let’s go, Hong Kong!



Hey ho, let’s go!

Hablas Español? You need to right now, because Spain and Uruguay are out there and engaged in a spot of mano e mano.
The snappily named Pol Pla is a bit of a pocket rocket for the Spaniards, a pinball of energy in the centre of the park.
But the Uruguayans stick at it throughout and chase the game until the siren tells them it’s a 19-14 win for Spain. Felicidades.



Buenos dias everyone

Not going to plan here for Hong Kong. First blood to Canada, as Matt Oworu scores, and then David Richard is in.
But a great break from Salom Yiu gets the crowd on their feet. And Russell Webb breaks through the Canadian defence to cut the deficit.
Game on. Captain Max Woodward then bursts down the left and dives over. Webb fluffs his kick though. 14-12.



Hong Kong battling

Hong Kong off to a great start in the second half. Salom Yiu powers over in the left hand corner and the TMO gives it.
But David Richard’s second try puts Canada back in front. 19-17. Ref gives a penalty with 90 seconds to go. It’s now or never.
Now Canada get the penalty, and they’ll look to see out the final 47 seconds. Webb keeps the kick from going out with some brilliant handling on the touchline, setting up a final surge. But Canada have the ball again. The gong sounds, and it’s booted into touch.
Boos around Hong Kong Stadium. The hosts are out of the Plate. They’re still clapped off the pitch though. The fans have been brilliant all weekend.

Great Britain are sweeping aside Japan as they close in on the Plate semi-finals.
The crowd are trying to will Japan over the line, but Team GB are having none of it.
Five tries in all from them. Robbie Fergusson, Morgan Williams, Alec Coomes, and two from Femi Sofolarin.

The Plate quarter-finals are over. Here is your semi-final line up for later this afternoon.
New Zealand will take on Spain at 2.05pm, before Canada face Great Britain at 2.30pm.
It will be Kenya against Uruguay, and Hong Kong against Japan, in the 13th-place semi-finals at 1.15pm and 1.40pm respectively.



Plate semis set

Surprise package Samoa and Argentina are first up in the last eight of the Cup.
The Samoans pick up where they left off. That man Vaa Apelu Maliko goes over again, and Melani Mataveo converts for 7-0.
But Argentina go ahead with scores either side of the break from Tobias Wade and Marcos Moneta. Are the wheels about to fall off the Samoa Express?
Not today, Zurg. Owen Niue collects the ball on the left and sprints away, curling his run under the posts to give Mataveo the easiest of kicks.
We’re going to extra time.



All square for Samoa, Argentina

An incredible try-saving block from Samoa over the line somehow prevents Argentina winning this immediately.
Samoa then work the ball up the other end, and get the breakthrough after three more minutes through Vaovasa Afa Sua.
Everyone’s out on their feet after that one. Argentina – quite literally – had victory in their grasp, but for that wonderful diving block.



Samoans edge sudden death

It’s that time of the blog when the Post busts out a retro Sevens T-shirt, or four. We’ve seen the odd one in the stands this weekend too – a nice dash of nostalgia.

We won’t lie, the polyester-cotton blend they used back in the day is … a little punishing.
Here, we’ve got 1982, ’83, ’84 and ’86. Good grief, we’ve been coming to the Sevens for quite some time. Think about that if you’re buying merch today.
To be clear, the Post isn’t quite as old as he sounds. These tees were originally modelled by the Post’s dad, Bob.

Finance executive Jarl, here on day 3 with his two sons Tyser and Kaito, has been coming to the Sevens since 2016 and they are here today to cheer on Japan.
“So far so good,” he said. “It’s still warming up today, but we’re excited to be here. Expectations have been high, but we also have to be realistic – this is a journey towards opening up, but I’m hopeful.”

Renier du Plessis, one of several South African tourists who were denied entry to the stadium on Friday because of their amber codes, is watching Sunday’s matches from the Hong Kong Rugby Union’s corporate box with his friends.
“At this stage, we’re only having fun,” he says. “They [the HKRU] are treating us very nicely there, full catering, free beer. It’s lovely, we’re just enjoying the last day.”
The 38-year-old says the past two days waiting for their amber codes to turn blue on Hong Kong’s LeaveHomeSafe app have been “difficult”. But he’s happy to be provided with “proper food” at the corporate box.
Du Plessis admits the saga was their own fault, but insists that they didn’t intend to cause “any havoc”. He adds: “We have to respect the government’s regulations. At least I’m having fun now.”



A happy ending for ‘amber code’ fans

Phew. That was close.
Fiji’s quest for a record-extending sixth straight title lives on, but they are made to work for it late on in their Cup quarter-final against South Africa.
The world champs were cruising after tries either side of the break from Joseva Talacolo and Jeremaia Mantana, the second of them converted by Iowane Teba.
The Blitzboks struck back through Siviwe Soyizwapi, and Selvyn Davids added the extras. Some resilient last-ditch defending from Fiji then saw them over the line.
The Fijians will face Samoa in a mouth-watering all-Pacific islands semi-final at 3.45pm.

This is certainly a hit. The Hong Kong Jockey Club has arguably one of the busiest booths here at the Hong Kong Stadium – apart from Carlsberg, of course.
The club is giving children, and some brave adults, a virtual racing experience with VR googles offering a first hand insight into what it takes to be a jockey.
“It’s fun, but tiring,” said one child who climbed off the mechanical horse huffing and puffing.

Ireland look to be cruising into the Cup semi-finals, going up 19-5 in the second half against Australia thanks to a try from Jordan Conroy and two from Jack Kelly.
But three late scores from the Aussies see them make a remarkable turnaround.
Nick Malouf gets the comeback going with his second try of the match in the 13th minute, before james Turner adds another soon after to level it at 19-19.
Maurice Longbottom then seals if after the gong sounds. The crowd show their appreciation after that fantastic contest. 26-19 it ends.



Incredible Australia comeback

It’s time for the last Cup quarter-final.
Scores from Stephen Parez Edo Martin and Aaron Grandidier put France 14-0 up early on against the United States.
But veteran Perry Baker – the stand-in skipper here, for a young Eagles squad depleted by injury – races away in trademark fashion to cut the deficit.
Les Bleus quickly restore their 14-point lead though. Marius Domon breaks through and Edo Martin adds the extras. It’s 21-7 France at the break, as the first flecks of rain fall over So Kon Po.
A few minutes after the restart, Baker repeats his act and gets his second try for the US. But Grandidier spots a gap and does the same for France, who seal it 28-14.
France will face Australia in the semis. The US will take on Ireland in a 5th-place semi.


Allez Les Bleus

The costumes are looking just as creative on Sunday.
But just because you’re in fancy dress, it doesn’t mean you won’t be subjected to security checks at Hong Kong Stadium.

Secretary for Housing Winnie Ho Wing-yin is spotted making the rounds at Hong Kong Stadium.
The hosuing minister tells the Post that the atmosphere is really good and that she is very happy.
“I want to thank the Hong Kong Rugby Union for organising such a good event for Hong Kong residents, and I hope everyone can have fun,” Ho says.

Hong Kong Sevens star Salom Yiu is having quite a tournament but has hinted several times he may be getting towards the end of his playing career.
“We have young players coming up and they are local players, with Chung Mak-kwai and Max, who is a f****** beast, that guy,” Yiu said. “Also Liam Doherty is fast winger and then I hopefully can share my old man experience with them and it can blow up faster and faster. They’re coming up so quickly. It’s really exciting.”

Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu is expected to arrive at the Hong Kong Sevens later this evening.
“It’s the last day of the three-day Sevens tournament, and tonight is the final match. Looking forward to it! See you tonight!” Lee wrote in a post on his social media platforms.

Hong Kong are looking to finish on a high, but Japan have not read the script here in this 13th place semi-final.
Two tries from Kazuma Nakagawa, and one from Yoshihiro Noguchi, give them a commanding 17-0 lead.
But a double from Russell Webb gets the hosts back in it. There’s a huge roar every time Hong Kong get the ball and burst forward, but Japan are holding tight.
Then they break away and kill the game off with another score, this time from Shotaro Tsuoka. Harry Sayers gets the crowd on its feet again, touching down under the posts, but it’s too little too late. Japan win 24-17, and Hong Kong Stadium is not happy.
Earlier, Uruguay beat Kenya 10-7, and will now face Japan.



All over for Hong Kong

New Zealand and Spain have taken to the pitch for the first of the semi-final matches. After that last game with Hong Kong and Japan, the stadium is electric. Fans are up for some world class rugby today.

The big story this weekend has been the unstoppable, unassailable and undefeated defending champions Fiji.
Lingering pandemic restrictions have kept many of Fiji’s most loyal fans at home this year, but the fan base is strong on day 3. The Hong Kong fans are right behind them.

Bush Mwale scores the final try of the game to bring New Zealand to a dominant 24-7 victory over Spain in the first bowl semi-final game. New Zealand are looking incredible strong at this point in the competition.
On another note, the sun is now threatening to come out, the rain seems to have gone and the South Stand is warming up.
Canada and Great Britain take to the field for the second semi match.

And here they are. Possibly the most sober adults in the stands, and among the most tired, we reckon.
Put the violins away, though. The Post’s keyboard warriors are flagging a little here on day 3, but we can’t complain about our vantage point.

Great Britain denied a late first half try from Olufemi Sofolarin, who leapt through the air to cross the line, but team GB end the action-packed first half with a 12-0 lead over the Canadians.

Just wow. Canada pulled out a late surge to shock Great Britain and take the win in the second bowl semi-final. Canada’s Thomas Isherwood – affectionately known as Joe Dirt, due to his flowing locks – was the key for Canada as they edged to 17-12. They will now move on to face New Zealand. Competition today is blowing us away.

The Spanish players are doing the rounds in front of the South Stand, soaking up the vibes and posing for selfies with fans. Great to see that connection being restored between athletes and supporters in Hong Kong.

Argentina put away South Africa in the first plate semi-final match of the day, securing the win just as the final gong sounded. It’s all over for South Africa as they go down to Argentina 19-12.

Update: After being frisked earlier by security, the Teletubbies are now having a good time in the West Stand.

It took the stadium until 3.35pm to launch into the first Mexican wave of day. After a few half-hearted attempts yesterday, the stadium managed a huge five rounds. Goosebumps here.

Two giants of Sevens rugby, Fiji and Samoa, are here to get the first Cup semi-final under way. We could be in for a treat here, folks. Fiji start strongly with Filipe Sauturaga crossing the line by the posts to put them ahead 7-0.

There’s some emotional scenes taking place down on the pitch as Hong Kong Sevens star Salom Yiu Kam-shing gets a legend’s send off after his final game of the Hong Kong Sevens. Yiu is set to retire after next year’s Asian Games and today his legion of loyal fans and teammates are giving him a send off worth of his contribution to Hong Kong Sevens rugby. Thank you, Salom.

It’s job done for Fiji, who beat Samoa 19-7 to move into the Cup final at Hong Kong Stadium.
Filipe Sauturaga scored two tries, with joseva Talacolo also going over, putting an end to Samoa’s impressive run at the tournament.
The world champions will face either France or Australia, who are kicking off now in the other Cup semi.

How are we all faring? Those who have done all three days at the Sevens – and maybe some afters – may be starting to feel it.
Those who’ve been following it at home via these updates have put some hours in, too.
It’s time for one last push as we head towards finals time.
We’ve lined up this beauty, then let’s rip back into it.



Curry o’clock

It’s Australia against France now to see who will meet Fiji in the Cup final later on. Things are getting serious.
Australia have first blood as they lead 7-0 through Josh Turner. But they come under pressure from the French and have Henry Hutchison sin-binned before half-time.
France soon level the scores after the break. Could we have a repeat of 2019’s Fiji-France final on our hands?

Well, that was superb.
The vegetables were succulent, the curry sauce just the right amount of heady, and the rice fluffy and fragrant. We’re feeling blessed.
This second semi-final proves equally filling and tasty. It goes to extra time, locked at 7-7.
James Turner almost runs away to score but is taken out as he chips ahead. That gives Australia a penalty, and Maurice Longbottom kicks for goal – and lands it! The Wallabies are through 10-7.

Sunday selfies galore

It’s a penalty kick that sends Australia through to the Cup final – and it was a penalty kick that won them their last Hong Kong Sevens title, before their current players were even born.
Yes, the Wallabies have form in this stadium when it comes to bisecting the posts when the stakes are highest.

It was Michael Lynagh from the kicking tee all the way back in 1988, which tells you just how long the green-and-gold have waited for a title here.
And it was Maurice Longbottom in sudden death in today’s semi-final against France, to give his country a chance of ending 34 years of Hong Kong hurt.



Getting their kicks

Uruguay give Japan a 33-10 hiding in the Shield final.
It was 19-0 at half-time, after two tries from Carlos Deus, either side of Koba Brazionis’ score, and Diego Ardao extended the South Americans’ lead in the second half.
Japan got on the scoreboard through Yuu Kurihara, but Mateo Vinals extinguished any feint hopes of a comeback after crossing on 12 minutes.
Still, Japan weren’t done – Kurihara got his second try for good measure, after a good break down the left.
Next up it’s New Zealand and Canada in the Bowl final.



Uruguay cruise to Shield win

Those umming and ahhing about coming down to Hong Kong Stadium this weekend seemed to have made a decision to finally join. Several reports from the Eastern Stand say tickets for Sunday have been hard to come by.
“We only decided today to bring the kids down and let them have the experience of the Sevens. We’re really glad we did,” says ESF educator Sian.
Walking through the crowds and the late arrivals are a common theme. The stadium is filling up fast.

It’s another procession in the second final of the evening. New Zealand ease their way to the Bowl, beating Canada 33-5.
Tone Ng Shiu crosses in each half, with Leroy Carter also getting in on the act.
Canada get on the scoresheet through Matt Oworu, but the All Blacks quickly resume normal service, with Akuila Rokolisoa and Ngarohi McGarvey-Black strolling over late on.
There’s a little bust up between the players just before the end, but it’s all smiles and handshakes at the final whistle.
It won’t be the ending the Olympic and World Cup silver medallists were envisioning when the weekend started, but they will be happy to go out on a high note in Hong Kong.

Argentina are up to face the US for the Plate.
Fun fact. Argentina skipper Gaston Revol will become only the fourth player in Sevens Series history to play 90 tournaments after James Rodwell (93), Dan Norton (92) and Tim Mikkelson (91).

Argentina are on fire in the first half of this Plate final, taking a solid 21-0 lead over Team USA. Matias Osadczuk and Marcos Moneta look incredibly dangerous and are running circles around the US defence. Hong Kong Stadium is singing along to the Bon, We’re halfway There.

Hong Kong Sevens player Russell Webb is out meeting fans and we had a minute to have a chat.
“It genuinely feels like Hong Kong is back,” he said. “I played three years ago, today was 70 per cent full? But you could not not tell. It was so loud in the tunnel. Next week we’re off to Korea on Thursday then we’ve got Dubai a week or two after that. It’s all prep for the Asian Games next year and then the Olympic qualifiers, there’s a lot to play for.
“I’m gonna spend time with my family now the so-called bubble has burst. I’m gonna enjoy it – but I can’t enjoy it too much, we are off to Korea this week.”



‘Hong Kong is back,’ says Russell Webb

Argentina have taken the Plate final with a 36-0 thrashing over the US, dominating them at every turn. You’ve gotta hand it to the US, though, which is a sensational effort given that eight of this year’s squad are here playing the Hong Kong Sevens for the very first time.

At Ebenezer’s Kebabs & Pizzeria, which has a stand at the stadium, business has been booming.
According to Sunny Rekhani, one of the managing directors and owners of the restaurant chain, they have sold almost 1,200 kebabs on Sunday.”
So far, we found business to be very good and it is still ongoing, today is almost 25 to 35 per cent better than yesterday,” he said.
He also estimated that they have sold up to 1,400 slices of pizza daily.

France have taken the Bronze final with a thrilling, two-point win over Samoa – edging out their rivals 19-17. What a game. We are have just one game left in what has been a thrilling day of competition here at Hong Kong Stadium. What a way to get this new World Sevens Series started.

It has been 28 long years since Australia last played in a Cup final in Hong Kong, losing 32-20 to New Zealand in 1994 with a team featuring several Wallaby legends in George Gregan, Tim Horan, David Campese, David Wilson and Jason Little. Can they take the win? We are about to find out. It’s Fiji v Australia in the Cup final. Here. We. Go.

As reported earlier, they are visiting for the climax of the Sevens, and are spotted getting into the spirit of things by having drinks with rugby officials.

Now then. The time has come. Fiji, eternal favourites in Hong Kong, defending their title against a resurgent Australia.
The national anthems get everyone focused and now it’s on. Who will be Hong Kong Sevens champions of 2022?

Fiji are quick to get on the board. Joseva Talacolo spins in the tackle and, with his outsized right mitt, sends a one-handed pass to Josua Vakurinabili, who has an easy run-in at the right corner. It’s 5-0.
It’s not long before they’re in again, courtesy of a familiar figure. The diminutive Waisea Nacuqu has been outstanding all weekend, surely a player-of-the-tournament candidate. He puts Fiji 12-0 up.

His finish in the right corner, in front of the East Stand, gets his team back in the hunt on the stroke of half-time.
Both teams in huddles now, saying some final words. It’s now or never.
Whatever was said seems to work for the Wallabies, as Hutchison heads for the corner again – only to pass back inside for Tim Clements to finish. Anyone’s game now.

A sweet final

Fiji edge ahead, but Talacolo is sent to the sin-bin, and we’ve seen all weekend how being a player short can cost you in these tight matches.
Sure enough, Hutchison finds some space on the right touchline – his natural habitat it seems – and does brilliantly to reach out of the tackle to dot down.
What a star Hutchison has been this weekend.
But his team trail by two points at 17-15 and he or one of his mates need another moment of inspiration. A minute left here.

Oh my word. A last-gasp try by Nathan Lawson has nicked it.
