Leon Wei inspires Valley to Grand Final victory over HKCC
Prop scores key try as defending champions once again spoil Cricketers’ bid for the double
Local recruit Leon Wei Hon-sum showed what an invaluable asset he is by scoring the try that gave Societe Generale Valley the upper-hand as they defeated Leighton Asia HKCC 18-15 in a tightly contested Grand Championship final at King’s Park on Saturday.
While the top clubs could only recruit a couple of players from overseas, Valley cleverly pinpointed the front row as an area they needed to bolster.
Along with Currie Cup hooker Dayne Jans, they also grabbed Wei, and these signings proved their value to the side as Valley’s scrum held firm to set up the foundation for victory.
Wei, who also scored in the semi-final, was a cornerstone of the Valley scrum, who which stamped their intentions 33 seconds into the game when they pushed their counterparts off their own ball.
