‘Kong girl’ Cheung’s gold not the only bling that caught the eye during Olympic triumph

Gold wasn’t the only bling that stood out for Cheung Ka-long during his Olympic triumph in the early hours of Tuesday, with eagle-eyed social media users also highlighting his flashy jewellery.
Images and screenshots of the 27-year-old in action showed him wearing two bracelets and two rings from luxury brands during his dramatic victory over Italy’s Filippo Macchi.
“I had no idea Cheung Ka-long was a Kong girl nvm I love him more now,” one meme creator joked on Instagram, attracting almost 20,000 likes.
“Kong girl” is a lighthearted reference to those dubbed materialistic, and who love lavish spending on brand-name goods to highlight their status and wealth.
And some companies have already capitalised on his bling, with fashion websites for Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels advertising, “the same jewellery pieces as the Olympic champion and fencing god”.
The Van Cleef & Arpels Vintage Alhambra motif, a four-leaf clover, as well as the colour red, are believed to bring good luck and courage – and the motif’s price tag on the official website was HK$39,500 (US$5,057).
