Paris Olympics: Siobhan Haughey right to rest for 200m freestyle, Hong Kong relay team say
- ‘Very strong chance’ of success for Haughey as she starts her Games on Sunday, according to 4x100 metres freestyle teammate Camille Cheng
The Hong Kong women’s 4x100 metres freestyle quartet bowed out at the Paris Olympics but backed Siobhan Haughey to power on to individual honours after she was rested from relay duty.
Natalie Kan Cheuk-tung, Tam Hoi-lam, Camille Cheng Lily-mei and veteran Stephanie Au Hoi-shun were never in contention for a place in Saturday night’s final, after finishing seventh in their morning heat.
Haughey was part of the team that claimed Asian Games bronze last year, but missed the freestyle relay before winning two Olympic silver medals in the Tokyo Olympics and chose to repeat that formula in Paris.
“[Personal decisions] are part of the sport and we knew everybody’s goals coming in,” Cheng told the Post. “Siobhan has a very strong chance in the 100 and 200 [metres] and if she feels that is her main focus, we are here supporting her. We all enjoyed swimming this relay.”
Haughey is poised to swim for four straight days from Sunday, when she has 200 metres freestyle heats and semi-finals.
“I would say she is looking great, looking positive,” Cheng said.
