Judith Wyder has been crowed winner of the Golden Trail Series after winning the final 42km race in Nepal.

She finished only minutes ahead of Maude Mathys.

Wyder, from Switzerland, was teary-eyed at the end but looked very fresh for someone who had just run a mountain marathon at altitude in five hours, 42 minutes and three seconds.

Mathys finished in 5:46:01. She took a wrong turn early on and thought she was out of the race but the organiser said she could still race if she completed a particular climb.

“When I was told I could compete, it was motivation,” she said. But Mathys’ time was later discounted, so Silvia Rampazzo was declared second.

The Golden Trail Series was fought over seven races. The top ten men and women after six rounds were invited to the final in Nepal.
