The 10-kilometre race at Repulse Bay was forced to start an hour ahead of schedule, at 8.30am, after the Observatory said it would issue a No 3 typhoon signal at 10.40am.

Italian Dario Verani came first in the men’s race, finishing the six-lap course in one hour, 57 minutes and 39.20 seconds.

He overtook compatriot Marcello Guidi, who finished second in 1:57:39.80, in the final few metres of a thrilling finish that had the pair sprinting neck and neck to the line. Frenchman Marc-Antoine Olivier was third in 1:57:48.70.

“My race was perfect because I love to swim in these conditions. [At the beginning of the race] the sea was flat and without waves. So I’m very happy with this race,” Verani said.
