The nine-year-old Hongkonger making waves in the climbing community has been at it again, setting a record for becoming the youngest in China to complete a particularly challenging route.

Veronica Chik successfully tackled a 50-metre long outdoor bouldering route known as the “rock of life” in Jinshan, Long Village, Yangshuo, bouncing back after repeatedly failing to conquer the climb over the course of several hours.

The youngster previously claimed top honours in the boulder-and-lead combined competition for her age category at last year’s China National Youth Climbing Championships.

Chik’s rise up the climbing ranks has been guided by coach Liu Yongbang, and her family, who have followed her across the mainland to various training locations.

In an Instagram post, Chik said she was “so happy to have completed this route, and I’m very grateful to my coach and family for their support, which allowed me to achieve this goal”.
