Hong Kong’s Coggins to race solo at World Triathlon Cup, illness hits Brown, Yu
This year’s penultimate cup race will be staged in the South Korean city of Tongyeong on Saturday
Oscar Coggins will carry Hong Kong hopes on his shoulders at Saturday’s World Triathlon Cup event in South Korea, after illness forced compatriots Mark Yu Shing-him and Bailee Brown to withdraw.
The Hong Kong contingent had already been reduced after Jason Ng Tai-long decided to end his season early to come to terms with a crushing Olympic experience this summer.
Head coach Andrew Wright told the Post he was optimistic Ng would “be good for 2025 … after a proper physical and mental break”.
Wright also believed it was “a good sign” Ng had competed in an Asia Triathlon Cup leg in Hong Kong last week, when he finished fifth, barely three months after a torn wetsuit forced him to abandon his race in Paris.
Brown, meanwhile, finished third in the Hong Kong race, but said she “fell quite ill” the following day.
She was subsequently diagnosed with an E coli infection and Norovirus. Brown said her doctor believed she could have contracted the infections from swimming in Victoria Harbour, but there was no way of confirming that.
The 24-year-old, who made her World Triathlon Championship Series [WTCS] debut in Weihai last month, has had stomach problems in the past.
