Asian Games organisers in ⁠Japan said ⁠on Wednesday ⁠they were looking to reduce the number of participants at next month’s event after athlete and official registrations blew ‌past the projected 15,000.
The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) said last week entries had risen to around 17,000, including 11,000 athletes and 6,000 officials, for the Games, scheduled to be held in Nagoya and the ‌Aichi region from September 19 to October 4.
Figures for the 2023 Games were about 12,000 athletes and 5,000 officials, making it the largest Games ever, and bigger than the Paris Olympics.
“It ‌is true that the number of registrations ⁠has exceeded 15,000 and we are trying to ⁠trim the excess numbers,” the organising committee told Reuters. “We are in talks with ‌the OCA ‌for a solution.”

Reuters has contacted the OCA for comment.
Japan’s Kyodo news agency said the local organising committee had asked the OCA to address the surge in numbers.
The organising committee told AFP that they would “prefer not to comment on the details of our discussions with the OCA”.
“We are sharing information with the OCA, the event organiser, regarding the registration status of the various national teams, and are holding regular discussions with them regarding arrangements such as accommodation for the teams,” a spokesperson said.
AFP has contacted the OCA for comment.
The overshoot in numbers could strain ‌accommodation plans for the Games, which will ⁠not ⁠feature a traditional athletes’ village.
Between 4,000 and 5,000 athletes will stay on the Costa Serena cruise ship, which features 571 cabins, seven swimming pools, eight restaurants and nine bars.
Officials are confident that the plan will not be disrupted by Japan’s typhoon season, which is usually in full swing in September-October.
A further 2,000 athletes and officials will stay in wooden shipping container-style huts in Nagoya’s Garden Pier area while the rest will stay in hotels.
That includes in Tokyo, where swimming, diving and equestrian events will take place.
The Games will bring together 45 countries and regions for 16 days of world-class competition across 43 sports and 71 disciplines, with 1,407 medals to be awarded across 469 events.
The 2023 Hangzhou Games involved 40 sports and 61 disciplines.
