Global music superstar Jackson Wang gave Hong Kong something to celebrate on Saturday, after the city’s finest fencers had largely a day to forget at the Kerry Fencing World Championships.
Wang, a rapper, singer, and songwriter, was appointed as the first global ambassador for the International Fencing Federation (FIE), a role he said he had “always wanted to do” for the sport he had loved since a young age.
“I started as a fencer, and I’m back as one; it’s a part of my life, and a big thing in my family where I grew up,” he said. “I just love the sport, and I want to share fencing with more people; the true beauty of it as well as reaching a diverse audience.
“I’ve always wanted to do this, and it got to a point where I didn’t want to wait any more. My love for fencing is beyond a lot of stuff, so I want to spread the beauty of the sport through entertainment.”
A former Asian junior and cadet champion in sabre, global icon Wang “definitely checked all the boxes” to fit in his new role with the international fencing family, according to senior FIE officials.

“It wasn’t hard to see what he could bring to the table. I think what’s most important is the fact that he wants to do it,” said Donald Anthony, vice-president of the FIE. “He’s part of the family; he’s coming back to the family.
“We’re so glad to have him, and we know that he’s accomplished all of these things outside fencing. And now we want to see and experience what I know he can bring to this road to Los Angeles 2028.”
Global superstar Wang stayed humble when he suggested that his new ambassador role was never just about his influence when it came to promoting the sport.
“My influence is very limited, but I’m doing my best, and I’ll figure out my ways,” said the Hong Kong-born singer, who has a highly successful solo career. “I think it’s more about the strategy through entertainment under the big umbrella of entertainment. How do we put it on the table and reach a diversity of people?”
While the global entertainment icon stopped short of revealing details of the coming “big project”, it did not stop the FIE from showing faith in its new ambassador, calling Wang’s appointment both “a strategy and an objective”.


“With Jackson already part of the fencing family, with the vision that he has for where he sees fencing going, where he sees fencing being able to go, I think it’s an opportunity for the whole sport to rise,” said American native Anthony.
“FIE is going to move forward fast, maybe faster with Jackson being a part of it. I see this [opportunity as] growing the sport and working together to build fencing to be the best sport it could be.”
On the piste, the host fencers all fell prematurely at the AsiaWorld-Expo, with Ryan Choi Chun-yin and Cheung Ka-long eliminated in the round of 16. Harris Ho Shing-him exited in the first round.
World No 2 Choi and world No 15 Cheung both won their first two knockout bouts, but Choi saw his title defence snapped by Daniel Dosa of Hungary in a 15-13 loss. Two-time Olympic champion Cheung was thrashed by world No 1 Kirill Borodachev, crashing out in a 15-2 loss.

Choi, who has been carrying a left-hamstring injury for the past couple of weeks, revealed he re-injured himself in the second-round win over Daniil Kerik.
“It’s the first time that I have played with an injury, so it’s a learning process,” the 28-year-old said. “I will only know more about my injury tomorrow, but I definitely will fence [at the team event on Tuesday] if I can.”
Cheung added that he was not “too unhappy” with the loss, knowing that he did the best he could.
“Every bout is a new one; I don’t think it’s a good thing to dwell on past achievements and burden yourself with them constantly,” the left-hander said.
“Of course, I could do better; I could score a few more points. It’s kind of embarrassing to finish with just two points, but it is what it is – Borodachev is a really good fencer.”
The city’s foil head coach, Greg Koenig, acknowledged his disciples did not have the best results, but his team would shift their focus to the team event on Tuesday.
“I know we are used to having some medals for many years, but we have to understand that it’s not so easy,” Koenig said. “What is important for me is to find the good words [for] the team competition because I have big hopes for this event.”
In women’s épée, Kaylin Hsieh Sin-yan lost 15-11 to Fiona Mueller of Germany, while Haidi Wu fell short, also in the second knockout round, in a 15-7 loss to Tang Junyao of China. Moonie Chu Ka-mong lost in the opening round to Tierna Oxenreider of the United States.
