Hong Kong speed skater Darren Kwok Tsz-fung said he was excited to finally race against the world’s elite when he competes at the Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina next month.
Kwok, who served as a reserve at the 2022 Beijing Games four years ago, is one of two short-track speed skaters from the city to be selected for the Games in Italy.
This will be the sixth time the city will compete at the highest level of winter sport.
“When I met those top athletes back then, I could only dream of competing against them,” Kwok, 21, said. “Now that dream is coming true, and I am thrilled for the Games ahead.”
The International Skating Union (ISU) confirmed in December that the city’s team had earned quota places in the men’s 1,000m and 1,500m short-track events.

The Hong Kong, China Skating Union later named Kwok to compete, citing his “outstanding performance in the 500m event”, while 2022 Olympian Sidney Chu would serve as the reserve.
Also picked to compete is Joey Lam Ching-yan, who reclaimed her Olympic spot last Friday after Great Britain’s unused quota was reallocated from the standby list.
Lam, who will compete in the 1,500m, had initially missed out because of ISU distribution rules. Nicole Law Ching-shun will serve as the reserve.
On missing out on a spot initially, Lam said: “I did not overthink it at the time – I just kept training as normal and tried to figure it out with the coach and skating union. I really appreciate Sidney Chu for speaking up on my behalf.”
As with Kwok, Lam will be taking part in her first Olympics.
Asked about her goals in Italy, Lam, who will compete in the 1,500m, said: “Give it everything I have got, do not waste all these years of hard training, hopefully make it into the top 20 and the next round.”
Kwok name-checked South Korean Rim Jong-un, the 2024 and 2025 world junior champion, as one of those rivals he would be looking out for.
“Rim is a new-generation powerhouse who’s improving at an incredible rate,” Kwok said. “I am looking forward to competing with him in Milano.”

With less than a month until the Games, Sun Dandan, head coach of the team, said both athletes were in recovery mode after a demanding qualification campaign.
“After completing four qualification events, their energy levels took a huge hit and they are not at their peak right now,” Sun said. “But we are working hard in our preparations to ensure they are in optimal condition by [the time of the competition].”
Following specialised training in the northeastern Chinese city of Daqing and a three-day break in Hong Kong, the duo have headed to South Korea for final preparations.
“We will train at Korea National Sport University alongside local athletes to sharpen their stamina and speed before heading to Milano,” Sun added.
