We’re much closer to the end than the beginning of what has been an enthralling National Games, but we’re not done yet.
Fresh off a first fencing gold for the men’s foil team, their épée counterparts get a chance to redeem themselves after the individual slip-ups they all suffered earlier this week.
In badminton, mixed doubles Olympic champions Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong are proving that age is just a number. Having retired after their golden hurrah in Paris, they came back for an encore and are one win away from another title.
Four wheels might be good, but two are better where Hong Kong’s athletes are concerned, and there is a chance for more gold in mountain biking.
Here’s what is coming up on the penultimate day of the 15th National Games.

Épée redemption hour
The city’s men’s épée fencing team are looking to shine as a unit after suffering early exits in the individual event earlier this week.
Cedric Ho Wai-hang and Anson Ng Ho-tin, the 2024 Asian champion and runner-up respectively, and Fong Hoi-sun, who won National Games bronze in 2017, fancy their chances as a collective, despite none getting past the second round individually on Monday.
Hong Kong may be handed a lower seeding as a consequence, but Ho said he was determined to “bring down” whomever they face.
The women’s foil team are also in action.
Titans clash again
We reach the last event at the Galaxy Arena, and there is arguably nothing better than the table tennis men’s team final.
Quality is almost guaranteed, given the stellar names, as Shanghai and Beijing go head to head from 6pm.
Olympic champion Fan Zhendong, representing Shanghai for the first time at the Games, has already this week pocketed the men’s singles gold, ahead of world No 2 Lin Shidong and world champion Wang Chuqin.
Expected to play in two singles matches, Fan also has doubles specialist Xu Xin by his side. Beijing will have world No 1 Wang and the legendary Ma Long.
Taking on the pros
Hong Kong’s baseball players will fight Tianjin for seventh spot from 9am, after Shandong condemned them to their second straight single-run loss in Zhongshan on Wednesday.
The city team, who lost 5-4 to Fujian in their closing group fixture, were beaten 7-6 by Shandong in their fifth-to-eighth semi-final, after leading 5-4 following the third inning.
Outfielder Ken Yung Chun-wai said the result was “truly a shame” and his side felt “this was a match we absolutely could have won”, despite Shandong being stocked with professional players.
“We hope to absorb this valuable experience and allow it to forge us into a better Hong Kong team for future matches,” Yung said.
Tianjin also boast a team of professionals but Yung said: “We will put forward our absolute maximum effort to earn the win.”
Pair’s final bite?
The return of mixed-doubles badminton duo Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong just for the National Games seems to have been worthwhile, with the pair making it to the final.
Zheng and Huang, who are representing Zhejiang, retired from the sport after winning gold at the Paris Olympics.

And they have been relatively untroubled, receiving a first-round bye and then not having to finish their quarter-final after Fujian’s Ou Xuanyi and Huang Dongping retired in the third set.
They then beat Guangdong’s Gao Jiaxuan and Chen Fanghui to reach the final.
At the Shenzhen Gymnasium decider, the seasoned duo will face the younger Hunan pair of Zhou Zhihong and Wei Yaxin.
Mountain bikers
If you thought Ceci Lee Sze-wing had drawn a line under the action on two wheels when she won her third cycling gold of these National Games on Monday, you have another thing coming.
Hong Kong still have three cyclists chasing honours today, this time in the mountain bike competition over in Jiangmen.
It is an early start for Gary Lai Chun-kin, who will go in the men’s competition from 9am.
The women begin at 11am, with Hong Kong represented by Heidi Yu Hoi-tik and the versatile Kwan Tsz-kwan, who helped Lee win road race gold last week and was also a member of the city’s team pursuit quartet in the city’s Velodrome.
