Path to Olympic redemption starts at China’s Asian Winter Games for Hong Kong skier Yung
The 2022 Beijing Games were devastating for the history-making then-17-year-old, but he says he has learned from the experience
Three years ago, Adrian Yung Hau-tsuen was feeling on top of the world.
The first male skier from Hong Kong to qualify for a Winter Olympics, the then 17-year-old headed to Beijing full of the optimism of youth and with a determination to give it “120 per cent against the world’s best”.
Things did not turn out exactly as planned.
Yung crashed out of both the giant slalom and slalom, and after his first run in the former admitted to lacking confidence and struggling to control his nerves.
The slalom was little better, with Yung missing a gate early and confessing to being “a little bit devastated”. In the tough conditions, the Hongkonger was one of 36 in a field of 88 skiers who did not make it to the bottom.
Next month, Yung will be representing Hong Kong again at a major international competition, when the Asian Winter Games get under way in Harbin, and he has spent the intervening years working on improving every aspect of his skiing.
