New World Harbour Race 2024 cancelled as Super Typhoon Yinxing edges closer to Hong Kong
The Hong Kong Observatory is set to issue a T3 signal later on Saturday, forcing organisers to cancel the event
The New World Harbour Race 2024, originally set for Sunday, has been called off with Super Typhoon Yinxing moving closer to Hong Kong.
The 11th Asian Open Water Swimming Championships 5km race, which was due to take place at the same time, has also been axed.
“Due to the Tropical Cyclone Warning issued by the Hong Kong Observatory, which is set to last for a while with weather conditions affected, and to ensure the safety of participants and staff, the Hong Kong China Swimming Association (HKCSA), upon careful consideration, has taken the decision to cancel the New World Harbour Race 2024, originally scheduled for November 10,” a statement read.
Organisers confirmed swimmers who qualified would be refunded their HK$350 entry fee, HK$150 time-trial fee and, where applicable, additional HK$100 charitable donation.
Ronnie Wong Man-chiu, president of the HKCSA, said safety had always been the top priority and his organisation was sorry for “any inconvenience caused and hopes that all swimmers will join us for next year’s race”.
