The Chinese Swimming Association (CSA) announced its roster for the coming Paris Olympics on Tuesday, with 11 of the 23 athletes who were revealed to have tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs set to compete in July.
In April, it was reported that seven months before the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, 23 Chinese swimmers had tested positive for the banned substance trimetazidine (TMZ), a prescription heart drug that can enhance performance.
Almost half of them went on to compete in Tokyo.
China denied allegations that athletes had been doping and said the tests, which were conducted by its own anti-doping authority, came back negative because of contaminated surfaces in a hotel they were staying in.
After initially not intervening, the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) called for an independent investigation by Swiss prosecutor Eric Cottier after the scandal was made public.

Six of the athletes who tested positive and competed in Tokyo will be in Paris: Zhang Yufei, Wang Shun, Qin Haiyang, Yu Yiting, Yang Junxuan and Peng Xuwei.
Zhang went on to win gold in the 200m butterfly and the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay, which was a world record at the time, at the Tokyo Games.
Yang, will compete in the 100m freestyle against Siobhan Haughey after she set a national record of 52.68 at China’s Olympic trials in Shenzhen in April, was also a member of the relay team, but the other two members Li Bingjie and Tang Muhan, returned negative tests.
Wang won gold in the men’s 200m medley and Yu, who was only 15 at the time she tested positive, competed in the 200m and 400m medley in Tokyo but did not win a medal.
Ge Chutong, Sun Jiajun, Fei Liwei, Chen Juner and Wang Xue’er also tested positive. They did not make it to Tokyo in 2021 but have this time around.
Allegations aside, the Chinese team boasts a host of talent.
Pan Zhanle is the 100m freestyle world record holder and could get his first Olympic gold this year.
Tang Qianting is only 20 but won gold in the women’s 100m breaststroke at the World Aquatic Championships in Doha in February and got gold in the 50m version at the Asian Games in September.
