The clock was ticking for Siobhan Haughey on Friday as she gave her ankle injury extra time to heal before deciding whether to enter the final leg of the Mare Nostrum Tour.

This weekend’s third instalment of the series, in Canet-en-Roussillion in the south of France, is the last opportunity for Haughey to return to competitive action before heading to Budapest for the World Championships, which begin in three weeks.

She withdrew on the eve of the first leg of the tour in Monaco after slipping on the poolside in Dubai and hurting her right ankle, then remained absent for the second leg in Barcelona in midweek as a precaution.

But the Hong Kong team were not ruling out bringing back the double Olympic medallist in France.

“We’ll have to see, but there’s a chance [to take part],” Hong Kong head coach Chen Jianhong said, adding that a decision could be made on Saturday.

Earlier this week, Haughey wrote on Instagram that “a small bump on the way won’t stop me”, saying that she was “still training, still smiling”.

Having remained with the Hong Kong team in Barcelona, Haughey posted an Instagram story on Wednesday about her early-morning training at the Club Natacio Sant Andreu, where the second leg of the Mare Nostrum Tour was being held.
