Chinese Formula 1 hopeful Zhou Guanyu showed his intent ahead of the first Formula 2 race of the season by taking pole position in Friday’s qualifying and surviving an investigation by race stewards.

Zhou was the fastest around the Bahrain International Circuit, beating Christian Lundgaard by just 0.003 of a second in his final attempt of the day.

The Dane had taken the fastest lap from Zhou with a 1:42.851 time but the ART man was then bested by the Chinese UNI-Virtuosi Racing team driver.

“Obviously, I am happy to be sitting here but it hurts to be beat by 3 thousandths by your academy mate,” Lundgaard said after qualifying. Both he and Zhou are teammates in the Alpine Academy.

Zhou was pleased with his efforts in Sakhir, dismissing concerns that the stewards were looking into him taking the chequered flag twice.

He later received a reprimand after their investigation but was allowed to keep pole and the four championship points that come with it.
