UFC 272: Dana White says Zhang Weili’s next opponent is ‘probably Joanna Jedrzejczyk’
- UFC president says promotion is targeting a rematch between former strawweight champions, who produced Fight of the Year in 2020
- White adds that ‘nothing stood out’ about Yan Xiaonan’s controversial decision loss to Marina Rodriguez on UFC 272 undercard
The UFC is targeting a long-awaited rematch between former strawweight champions Zhang Weili and Joanna Jedrzejczyk.
Company president Dana White revealed the plan at the post-fight press conference for Saturday’s UFC 272 event in Las Vegas – though he certainly kept it brief.
“Probably Joanna,” he told a reporter when asked what’s next for Zhang.
Jedrzejczyk was at the T-Mobile Arena to watch UFC 272, and told the media beforehand that she expected to have some fight news soon.
Zhang (21-3) and Jedrzejczyk (16-4) first met in March 2020. At the time, Zhang was the reigning champion, while Jedrzejczyk was looking to reclaim the division’s title. The two women traded heavy hands for five frenetic rounds, with Zhang ultimately winning a decision to retain the title in an instant classic.
Today, Zhang is riding back-to-back losses to reigning strawweight champion Rose Namajunas – a first-round knockout and a razor-close decision.
Jedrzejczyk, meanwhile, has not fought since her 2020 loss to Zhang but has long made it clear that she is not retired.
