UFC: Dana White ‘could care less’ about Omicron variant – ‘I’m not worried about any of that stuff’
- Covid-19 numbers are on the rise in the US and worldwide, but White claims to be unconcerned by new variant
- Las Vegas-based MMA promotion ‘cruised right through’ the worst of the pandemic, UFC president says
Dana White is not losing any sleep over the Omicron variant.
White, the president of the UFC, was asked about the variant, and the surge of Covid-19 cases it is causing worldwide, at the post-fight press conference for Saturday’s UFC Vegas 45 – the promotion’s last event of the year.
While other major sports have introduced significant policy changes to reduce the spread of the omicron variant, it does not sound like the UFC will be following suit. At least, not yet.
“Through what I’m hoping was the worst of the worst, we cruised right through it,” White said, giving himself a pat on the back for guiding the UFC through the earlier phases of the pandemic. “I’m not worried about any of that stuff. I could care less.”
For the moment, White has seemingly put his focus on the UFC’s busy 2022 calendar, which already features a long list of alluring fights.
Of all those fights, the UFC boss said he is most looking forward to a heavyweight title showdown between undisputed champ Francis Ngannou and interim champ Ciryl Gane, scheduled for UFC 270 on January 14.
“Ciryl Gane and Francis Ngannou is what I’m most excited for right now,” he said. “Two big, bad a** heavyweights in their prime. One is slick, has great footwork, great hands. The other one has devastating one-punch power. It does not get any better than that.”
