Former UFC strawweight champion Zhang Weili has been on the end of criticism from some fans and fighters after her defeat by Rose Namajunas, but the only other woman to defeat her has come to her defence.

No 2 ranked ONE Championship atomweight Meng Bo beat Zhang in November 2013, in what was an MMA debut for both. It took 21 fights until Zhang would lose a second time, suffering a first-round TKO against Namajunas at UFC 261 in April.

“I feel so sorry for Zhang Weili because I know she must have been training super hard for that fight to defend the belt,” Meng told the Post. “She must have had tonnes of pressure under the title of first-ever UFC Chinese champ.

“That fight only lasted like 10 seconds, right? I have to say I feel a little disappointed because you’re training for such a long time but when you’re in the Circle or the Octagon, you only get 10 seconds, and then everything ends and you lose your belt, so I’m so sorry for that.”

A swift head kick from Namajunas 78 seconds into the fight sealed the deal in Jacksonville, Florida. Zhang has since spoken openly about the experience and eagerly anticipates a rematch, but has been accused of making excuses in some quarters.
