Gilbert Burns believes fighting Nate Diaz would be “easy money” – but he doesn’t believe the American has earned the right to face him.

The Stockton, California native (21-13) taunted “amateur” Burns on Twitter last month in response to comments to SCMP MMA from the Brazilian, who had criticised Leon Edwards’ performance in his unanimous decision win against Diaz at UFC 263.

“Durinho” returns in a potential welterweight title eliminator against Stephen Thompson in Saturday night’s UFC 264 co-main event, though would consider taking what might arguably be an even bigger payday.

“An easy fight. Easy money for sure fighting Nate – any day of the week,” Burns said. “He is not in my plans right now. I don’t think he deserves to fight me. I’m number two in the world. But he’s a big fight and he brings a lot of eyes and a lot of fans. Why not?

“He’s coming off of two losses. There’s not much he can say about it [deserving to fight Burns]. I try to keep respect to all these OG guys in the UFC, but at the end of the day, these guys have so many losses that I would fight them for sure, but I’m not chasing that fight.”

Burns (19-4) looks to get back on track against the ageless “Wonderboy” this weekend, after his first career title shot ended in a second-round TKO defeat by former teammate Kamaru Usman in February.
