Former two-weight champ McGregor (22-5) was a favourite with oddsmakers but lost Sunday’s UFC 257 lightweight main event by second-round TKO, leaving him with three defeats in his last six fights.

A fellow former UFC double champ, Canadian icon St-Pierre (26-2) pointed to his own surprise first-round TKO defeat by Matt Serra in 2007. The now-retired 39-year-old bounced back to regain the undisputed welterweight title from American Serra (11-7) a year later, and never lost again.

“I think he needs to be reborn,” St-Pierre said of McGregor on Michael Bisping’s Believe You Me podcast. “He needs to change things in his training and in his life that he believes were the causes for his failure. It doesn’t matter if it’s true or not, as long as he believes.

“When I lost to Matt Serra, I trained myself to believe I lost because I underestimated him. Maybe I wasn’t scared enough, maybe I didn’t put too much in training, that’s what I tried to force myself to believe. Maybe it’s not true, but the important part is he believes in it so he can build on his confidence from it.
