UFC: Jorge Masvidal ‘nothing special’ and I’ll stop him, says Leon Edwards as he campaigns for Kamaru Usman fight
- ‘I truly believe I’ll stop him – he’s nothing special, I knew that before he got beat by Usman,’ says Edwards
- ‘[The beef] will never go away until I get my hands on him. Even after, it wouldn’t go away,’ adds the Briton of backstage scuffle with Masvidal
Leon Edwards believes it’s his turn to fight for the UFC welterweight title, but he’s open to other options.
The welterweight division is all fight fans are talking about after last weekend’s UFC 251 card, which saw the reigning champion Kamaru Usman defend his throne with a lopsided decision win over short-notice challenger Jorge Masvidal.
Edwards, like anybody else with an interest in fighting, was tuned in for that championship bout, but he wasn’t surprised by the outcome.
“I thought what happened was going to happen,” Edwards told SCMP MMA from his home in Birmingham, UK. “I never thought Jorge was a championship-level fighter in the first place.
“Usman was the bigger, stronger guy. He’s more well-rounded. He’s been more active. So I knew [he was going to win]. I thought Jorge only had a puncher’s chance of winning, and that was taken away after the first round.”
