Khabib Nurmagomedov has vowed to put his differences with Tony Ferguson behind him after the chances of them ever finally meeting in the Octagon potentially slipped away for good at UFC 249.

“El Cucuy” suffered a fifth-round TKO in his interim lightweight title fight against Justin Gaethje in an empty VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida. UFC president Dana White confirmed lightweight champ Nurmagomedov will next fight Gaethje later this year.

Ferguson has been matched up with the Russian on five occasions since 2015 but each time it has been cancelled, the most recent in April because of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

“Whatever happened is in the past. Heads up Tony, I hope everything is good with you and your family. When your son [grows] up, he’ll be proud [of] you,” Khabib tweeted.

Nurmagomedov’s tweet of commiseration followed one that simply said “no comment” after Gaethje’s impressive counter-attacking performance against overwhelming favourite Ferguson.
