UFC: Jorge Masvidal and Henry Cejudo feud over fighter of the year award
- Two-weight champion Cejudo tells Masvidal to ‘bend the knee’ as he states claim for fighter of the year
- Masvidal appears to compare Cejudo’s ‘cringeworthy’ persona with controversial welterweight Colby Covington
Henry Cejudo and Jorge Masvidal have been quarrelling over who deserves to be crowned fighter of the year after the pair’s outstanding performances in 2019.
The 32-year-old Cejudo (professional record 15-2), who calls himself “Triple C” because he is a two-weight UFC division champion and an Olympic gold medallist, defeated bantamweight contenders TJ Dillashaw and Marlon Moraes in what is considered the American’s breakout year in MMA.
“Take [a] good look at this man, because in a few days I’ll be the 2019 fighter of the year! Saved an entire division in 32 sec, won a second world title. I am the baddest [expletive] ever,” Cejudo tweeted alongside a photo with the flyweight and bantamweight belts strapped on his shoulders.
“Gamebred” Masvidal (35-13) has had a similarly remarkable career resurgence having knocked out Darren Till and Ben Askren in stunning fashion before winning the promotion’s inaugural “BMF” belt against Nate Diaz in November.
The Cuban-American replied: “Hold my pizza #1of1”, to which Cejudo said “That’s more like Juan on Juan. I’m 1 of 1, Olympic Champ, flyweight champ and bantamweight champ. – Triple C.”
Cejudo, who defeated greatest of all time-nominee Demetrious Johnson in 2018, insisted that he is more worthy of the award because he saved the flyweight division which was reportedly set to be scrapped by UFC boss Dana White. He has since taken up the persona of “The King of Cringe” in an attempt to market himself to new fans.
