UFC 244 doctor who stopped Nate Diaz continuing mulls police protection after threats, abuse
- Cageside doctor says angry fans have personally threatened him and his office staff after calling off ‘BMF’ bout before fourth round
- Nate Diaz suffered nasty cut above his eye against Jorge Masvidal, and doctor says he made a ‘tough, objective call’
The doctor who stopped Saturday’s main event at UFC 244 said he is contemplating police protection after being inundated with threats.
New York-based neurologist Dr Nitin K. Sethi decided Nate Diaz could no longer continue after the third round against Jorge Masvidal because of a nasty cut above his eye, which was opened up in the first round.
“I’m a very good neurologist and a very good doctor, and calling me f****** scum online and calling my office staff and yelling at them, threatening me, I fear for my health and safety,” he told MMAFighting.com. “Somebody’s going to get hurt, and it’s probably going to be me this time.
The capacity Madison Square Garden crowd erupted into boos and chanted “b******” at the decision, before Masvidal and Diaz both promised to run it back.
Sethi said he made an overall objective assessment of Diaz and how the fight was going, and not just the cut.
