Andrew Wright has told Hong Kong’s triathletes to “go all out from the start” when they complete their competitive Asian Games preparations in Canada this weekend.
A six-strong city squad will race in the World Triathlon Cup leg in Edmonton, before moving into camp ahead of “fighting for the survival of our sport” in Japan in September.
Bronze medallists in the mixed-team relay in Hangzhou three years ago, success of any kind in the individual or team races in Aichi-Nagoya would maintain the sport’s Tier A status at the Hong Kong Sports Institute.
Japan took gold in all three races in 2023, and will be heavy favourites to do so again on home soil. China, meanwhile, will expect to feature on the podium across all disciplines.
Qualifying for the Los Angeles Olympics would also secure Tier A status, as would gold at the National Games. But Oscar Coggins could only manage bronze in the men’s individual race, and the team took silver.

Neither Robin Elg nor Bailee Brown, both part of the Asian Games team, have recovered from injuries in time for the sprint-distance Canadian races. Elg last competed in the National Games in November, while Brown has been absent since May.
“They’re still fighting to get fit,” Wright said. “We couldn’t risk them here, because it’s too close to the Games.”
Oscar Coggins will lead the Hong Kong men’s challenge on Saturday, with teammates Nick Yip Tak-long and Nick Tsang Cheung-sing also among the 65-strong field.
Jason Ng Tai-long, the 2024 Paris Olympian who has recently returned from his own bone stress issue, is sitting out this weekend.
An athlete who formerly found extended journeys “an extra load I could not tolerate”, and was susceptible to illness after long-haul flights, Coggins meticulously readied himself for the 16 hours of travel to reach Edmonton.
He initially skipped longer treks after returning from a six-month break in March 2024, but has since performed well in races in Poland and Turkey.
“Oscar shifted his sleeping hours to get closer to Canada time while in Hong Kong,” Wright said.
“Also, using his own money, he upgraded his seat to premium economy to allow him more space and sleep. We were very careful with his pre-race training and recovery monitoring to ensure he was fresh getting on the flight.”

Sisters Cade and Tallulah Wright, no relation to the coach, are in the 61-woman race on Saturday, alongside Hilda Choi Yan-yin, who has been overlooked for this year’s Games.
“Although those who didn’t make the team are disappointed, everyone is very supportive and stepping up to help create a good training environment for those who did,” Andrew Wright said. “Ultimately, we’re fighting for the survival of our sport, and we’re all in it together.”
Wong Tsz-to, picked with Coggins and Elg in Hong Kong’s men’s Asian Games team, is third on a waiting list to compete in the individual race in Edmonton. He is all but certain to figure in Sunday’s mixed relay, probably alongside Coggins and the Wrights.
“He’s focusing on the relay because it’s likely to be his best chance to contribute in the Asian Games,” Wright said.
The coach added that his athletes were “operating on the most professional level I have seen”.
They dedicated recent weeks to “moderate aerobic base training”, but will transfer to mainland province Yunnan for a 4½-week altitude camp after their Canadian exploits.
“Our race and training plan is based around peaking for the Asian Games, and this [weekend’s event] is in there to help improve our performance,” Wright said.
“It’ll test the recent training, and help us decide what we still use, and what we change in the next blocks. I want the athletes to go all out from the start, because that’s what the Games will be like.”
