Sunday was “not a good day” for Hong Kong star Ceci Lee Sze-wing, whose UCI Track World Cup campaign ended with a crash, bruises and a failure to add to her success of the opening night.
In fact, Lee’s silver in the elimination race at Hong Kong Velodrome on Friday turned out to be the city’s only medal of the three-day meet in Tseung Kwan O.
Still, head coach Herve Dagorne struck a “very positive” tone when it came to the team’s “massive progress” and regional standing, and said preparations for the Asian Games were on track.
Lee had qualified for the omnium finals with a third-place finish in her heat, battling a world-class field that included New Zealand’s Olympic bronze medallist Ally Wollaston. Lee finished 12th in the scratch race and 13th in the tempo race.
During the elimination race, the third event of the omnium, the 24-year-old collided with Canada’s Fiona Majendie and Poland’s Olga Wankiewicz on a bend. Her jersey and shorts were torn, and she suffered bruising to her thigh.

After the race was briefly neutralised, she insisted on continuing and finished 14th after nine other riders were eliminated.
In the final points race, Lee collected three points in the first sprint and two in the sixth. She later gained 20 points by lapping the field to finish with a total of 73 points, maintaining 14th place overall.
Japan’s Tsuyaka Uchino won the gold with 133 points.
According to her coach, Lee suffered deep burns and abrasions, particularly on her quadriceps and fingers.
“Fortunately, nothing broken,” Dagorne said, noting the team would depart for the next World Cup leg in Malaysia on Monday. “So, not a good day for her, but this is part of the job.”
As this was Lee’s first world-level omnium since the Turkey World Cup in March 2025, the French coach described the errors as a “good lesson”.
“Tempo could have been better. And elimination, wrong position at the wrong moment, so that’s not a good circle,” he said. “I will stay positive, for next week”.
Regarding the team’s overall performance, Dagorne noted significant improvement.
“Everybody did their best performance. Best performance also in executing technique, strategy. Big gap compared to last time, last World Cup we had here, or World Cup we had in Turkey last year,” he said.
The Frenchman expressed satisfaction with the team’s progress towards the Asian Games and compared the squad to other regional rivals.
“For sure, China National Team is far from us, but [there is progress] compared to the others and we’re getting closer in some events to Japan. So it’s a very positive way”.
Teammates Ng Sze-wing and Phoebe Tung competed in the women’s keirin earlier, with both finishing third in their respective first-round heats.
Tung, a 2024 Track Asia Cup silver medallist, advanced through the first repechage by finishing second. However, she placed fifth and seventh in the second round and second repechage, failing to reach the semi-finals.
Ng was eliminated after placing third in the first repechage.
A day after his historic fifth-place finish in the men’s keirin, To Cheuk-hei moved to the sprint on Sunday and set a venue personal best of 9.939 seconds, marking the first time he has broken the 10-second barrier at the home track.
However, he was eliminated after losing to Trinidadian veteran Njisane Phillip in the first head-to-head round.
Eighteen-year-old Paul Ng Po-li finished 46th in the same qualifying session with a time of 10.188 seconds and failed to advance.
Competing for a third consecutive day, Chu Tsun-wai and Tso Kai-kwong reached the Madison final through a late qualifying breakaway.
The Asian Championship bronze medallists eventually finished 15th with two points, notably avoiding losing a lap against elite competition.
