After giving up his “new life” in the UK to rejoin the Hong Kong cycling programme, Victor Lau Wan-hei is in a city squad set to begin its Asian Track Championships campaign in the thin air of Tagaytay in the Philippines on Wednesday.
The brother of leading city road racer Vincent Lau Wan-yau, the 31-year-old Victor Lau had been working as a physiotherapist after quitting full-time competition to study the practice overseas.
Herve Dagorne, the Hong Kong head coach, said that Lau had never completely cut ties, returning home to compete in the annual national championships, and serving as a training partner for both his sibling and Ceci Lee Sze-wing before the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
“He retired before Covid and went to the UK for his studies, but we stayed in contact and he still had a passion for cycling and kept training,” Dagorne said.
On one of his visits home last July, Lau shocked an esteemed field, featuring Charles Ng Pak-hang, Franco Chu Tsun-wai, Mow Ching-yin and Tso Kai-kwong, to win scratch race gold at the National Track Championships.
“He mentioned to me then that he would be happy to help us if there was a chance,” Dagorne said. “There wasn’t enough time before [November’s] National Games, but he has signed a training-partner contract with Hong Kong Sports Institute and is eligible for selection.”

Lau is in a six-man team pursuit squad in the Philippines, although he and 19-year-old Ma Yik-fei will sit out the opening morning’s qualifying round, with Dagorne plumping for Ng, Chu, Mow and Tso, the quartet that propelled Hong Kong to UCI Track World Cup silver in Perth last month, to “ensure we get a good place for the next round”.
The first round will be staged later on Wednesday, with the medal races the following morning.
“We’ll decide which team to choose from stage to stage; we have a clear view of everyone’s strengths and weaknesses,” said Dagorne, who is anticipating Japan and China jousting for gold, leaving Hong Kong to scrap for the final podium place with South Korea and Kazakhstan.
Of the six medals Hong Kong claimed from the 2025 edition, star rider Lee had an entire or partial hand in five of them.
Buoyed after claiming two bronze from the Perth World Cup for her first global hardware, she will be missing the reliable help of Yang Qianyu this week, as the 2022 Asian Games road race winner prepares to confirm her retirement on April 1.
Although Dagorne said the Asian meeting was of secondary importance to next month’s World Cup leg in Hong Kong, he challenged Lee to increase her gold count from the one she managed last year.
“I want to see good management of her emotions, technique and tactics,” he said.
“But if she can win more gold than last year, it would be confirmation of her level.”
Dagorne said he was also excited about the prospect of watching Law Ching-kiu compete in the junior competitions, after the 17-year-old claimed time trial medals from last year’s Asian Youth Games, where she was Hong Kong’s flag bearer, and this year’s Asian Road Championships.
All his riders are contending with the altitude of Tagaytay, which is located nearly 2,500 feet (760 metres) above sea level and close to the highly active Taal Volcano.
“It’s also a brand new velodrome they were still painting when we arrived on Saturday,” Dagorne said. “It’s a short period to adjust but everybody is doing well.”
