Oscar Coggins delivered an “outstanding” display on Saturday to finish 15th in a heavyweight World Triathlon Cup leg on Hainan Island.
Oliver Conway, the exceptional 20-year-old Briton, pipped 2024 Olympic mixed relay gold medallist Tim Hellwig to victory, with Hugo Milner claiming third.
In the women’s race, Bailee Brown was Hong Kong’s best performer in 23rd. Diana Isakova emerged victorious from a neck-and-neck battle with Sophie Malowiecki, ahead of third-placed Sian Rainsley.
Competing for just the second time in 2026, and having not tapered following an intense training camp, Hongkonger Coggins was in the front group after the 750-metre swim and 20km bike.
The 55 seconds that he ultimately finished adrift of winner Conway, who clocked 51 minutes dead, was exactly the time that separated the pair on a 5km run Coggins covered in 15 minutes and 10 seconds.
“Oscar was outstanding today, to produce a 15-minute run off a hard swim-bike is fantastic for this time of year; it’s very promising for him,” said Andrew Wright, the head coach.

Nonetheless, with this year’s main target, the Asian Games, in mind, Wright warned Coggins that “we still have work to do”.
“A medal performance is going to need a sub-15 off the bike, maybe a 14:40,” Wright said.
Aoba Yasumatsu of Japan in 13th was the only Asian athlete to finish ahead of Coggins in the 56-man field. Fan Junjie, the winner of last year’s National Games, where Coggins claimed bronze, could manage only 33rd. Fellow mainland China athlete Zhang Xirui was 24th, while Max Studer, the Swiss world No 10, crossed in 19th.
Easing back into competition after injury, Robin Elg withdrew before the run as promised, after he had stuck with the leaders during the opening two legs.
“Robin looked great dropping the hammer on the swim-bike,” Wright said.
The reigning world under-23 champion, Conway fended off the robust challenge of German Hellwig, who finished in 51:02.
Great Britain’s Milner summoned a blistering race-best run of 13:51 to secure the final podium spot.
Of the other Hongkongers, Nick Yip Tak-long placed 39th and Nick Tsang Cheung-sing was 45th. Wong Tsz-to, an automatic qualifier for the National Games four months ago, was down in 52nd.

“It was just a long day for Tsz-to, he was hanging on to his bike group for dear life,” Wright said.
It was an unhappy day in the women’s race for Cade Wright, as she withdrew following the bike leg because of illness. Fifth in the individual race and a mixed relay bronze medallist from last week’s Asia under-23 championships, she had delayed her return home to Scotland to compete in Haikou.
“Cade unfortunately got sick immediately after her Asian championships relay and has been unable to train or keep food down all week,” said Andrew Wright, who is no relation to the athlete.
Brown came home in one hour, one minute and five seconds for her 23rd place out of 37 starters. Hilda Choi Yan-yin was three positions back in 26th after stopping the clock in 1:02:21.
Russian Isakova won in 57:41, with Malowiecki of Australia on her tail in 57:42 for a career-best silver. Briton Rainsley managed 57:46.
“Most of our athletes showed progress, which was what we set out to do,” Wright said. “It’s positive to be part of this race without any taper or race-specific work.”
