After discarding old and outmoded methods to undergo a “new start” last year, Charles Ng Pak-hang will finally achieve one of his career goals when he makes his UCI Track World Cup debut in Perth on Friday.

A mixed relay time trial gold medallist from last month’s Asian Road Cycling Championships, Ng will be part of the Hong Kong team time trial quartet at an Australian venue that already holds fond memories.

The 27-year-old played down the scratch gold he claimed from an AusCycling track series event in Perth’s SpeedDome last October, calling it “just a club race and not that hard”.

It was another triumph in a year when Ng became the city road race champion and won Hong Kong International Track Cup gold in the scratch discipline.

“Last year was different for me, I changed a little bit in training,” Ng said, revealing how previous head coach Shen Jinkang would “force us to do seven hours’ endurance training [every day] in camp, no matter whether we had a road race or not”.

“In the past year, I’ve had more time for specific training on the track and time trial bike.
