The Hong Kong Badminton Open will be upgraded and become a second-tier event under the Badminton World Federation (BWF) for four years from 2027.

The sport’s world governing body announced on Monday the host cities for the various BWF World Tour events from 2027 to 2030, and the city’s event has been awarded the BWF750 status, an upgrade from the BWF500 event.

Shenzhen, Paris, New Delhi and Tokyo will be the other four BWF750 events, while the top tier BWF1000 events go to Chengdu, Odense, Birmingham, Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur.

The 36 events per year also included nine BWF500 events, eight BWF300 events and BWF100 events, as well as the year-end BWF World Tour Finals.

The tournament upgrade marked the first time that the city will be hosting a BWF750 event since its debut – as the Hong Kong Open Badminton Championship – back in 1982.

Hong Kong’s badminton chief believed the new tournament status reflected the international recognition of the city as a host, and cemented Hong Kong’s status as an international sports hub.
