A runner spotted carrying a baby during the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon on Sunday has raised safety concerns and sparked heated debate online about how the man was able to get on the course.
A widely circulated video on social media, which appears to have been taken by another runner, shows the man with a baby strapped to his chest, a backpack on his back, glasses slipping down his face and a phone in his hand.
The footage appears to show the man running along the West Kowloon Highway towards Stonecutters Island, which was part of the full marathon route between the 5km and 10km marks.
A race bib, which indicated he had set off in the full marathon group one, was pinned to the baby’s windproof cover.
Hong Kong, China Association of Athletics Affiliates (HKAAA), organisers of the Hong Kong Marathon, confirmed that “race officials requested the violated runner to retire and leave the race course immediately during Sunday’s event to ensure safety”.

The HKAAA added that if race officials were to find any violations of the official rules on the race course, the concerned participant would be asked to retire and leave the course immediately, resulting in disqualification.
“The organiser reserves the right to forbid such individuals from participating in future races,” it said.
The HKAAA also reminded runners to adhere to the official competition rules and refrain from any actions during the race that could pose a danger to themselves or others.
According to official live-tracking data, the runner, surnamed Wang, started at 6.25am and covered 15km in two hours and 20 minutes – a pace of almost 6.5km/h – before being stopped by race officials. Records show he did not finish the race.
The race regulations state that runners “accompanied by infants, children under the age of 16, or anyone not wearing a valid number bib are not permitted on the course. Those who violate this rule will be asked to leave immediately”.
Although the man was seen in the video supporting the baby’s neck with his left hand and moving at almost walking speed, the infant’s head can be seen bobbing up and down throughout.
Many online users condemned the man’s actions as selfish and irresponsible, with one noting that “the baby could easily have suffered a concussion”.
Another wrote: “If he had tripped and fallen forward, the baby could have been crushed.”
Others questioned how the man managed to pass security checks before entering the race area.
