Andrew Wright is set to issue a warning to his Hong Kong triathletes: ‘Do not squander your potentially once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to qualify for an Olympics’.
Head coach Wright will address the city squad on Friday to map out their route to the 2028 Games and underline that “there has never been a better time to be a Hong Kong triathlete aiming to qualify for the Olympics”.
His message will be delivered with the heavy caveat that any athlete trying to juggle qualifying with university studies would be embarking on a fool’s errand.
“If people are studying, even part-time, then it will be very hard to qualify, given the number of races they have to do,” Wright said.
Those words will be delivered separately over Zoom to Cade Wright – no relation to the coach – who is due to finish her mathematics degree from the University of Edinburgh in summer 2027.
Cade Wright, whose twin sister and fellow competitor Tallulah should complete her studies at the same university in May this year, was arguably the home triathlon revelation of last November’s National Games races in Hong Kong.
The 22-year-old delivered an unexpected fourth place in the individual evemt before her outstanding first leg launched the city team’s silver-medal relay effort.
“It’s very hard to convince people [to delay studies], even though it’s an Olympics,” Andrew Wright said. “I hope she will do it.
“My key message to them all [regardless of whether they are students] is that this programme set-up and structure has never been so conducive to producing results.
“We don’t know what it will look like in future, so they have to grasp this opportunity.
“They have to treat the next 2½ years as if they’re their last in the sport.”

Only four Hongkongers – Daniel Lee Chi-wo in 2004 and 2008, Tania Mak So-ning in 2008, Oscar Coggins at the Tokyo 2020 Games and Jason Ng Tai-long in 2024 – have competed in an Olympics. Coggins claimed individual National Games bronze two months ago.
After Ng withdrew midway through the bike leg, following issues with his wetsuit during the swim, in Paris two years ago, Wright pledged that he would “never again” allow any of his triathletes to accept the “ridiculous new flag slot”, awarded to the continent’s highest-ranked performer from a region where nobody qualified by conventional means.
“Anyone who qualifies that way is not prepared to race in an Olympics,” Wright said, explaining his reasoning.
Qualifying for LA begins from May 18, leaving Wright to tell his squad they have to be “consistent all year round”.
“World Cup events are as hard or harder than an Asian Games, and we have to hit all the races we are targeting,” he said.
Still, he is viewing the 2026 Asiad in September as “the biggest ever, for sure”, given it will also provide one Olympic slot.
The best finisher in Japan who does not secure Olympic qualification by other means will be handed a Games ticket.
“We are aiming to qualify by right; no one from Hong Kong has done it before,” Wright said.
