The popular duo of Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha maintained their strong start to the WTT Finals Hong Kong, dispatching compatriots Lin Shidong and Kuai Man 3-0 in mixed doubles on Thursday.

Wang and Sun made relatively easy work of beating the current world No 1 mixed doubles pair in their second group match, winning 13-11, 12-10, 11-6.

The popularity of the Olympic champions was clear to see at Hong Kong Coliseum, with more than 70 per cent of the seats filled for the match. The crowd also chanted “Shatou”, a combination of Wang’s and Sun’s nicknames, throughout.

Wang and Sun are juggling packed schedules in Hong Kong, with both players competing in the singles along with mixed doubles.

“Uncertainty is what makes competing so exciting,” Wang said. “If you choose to play two events [at the same tournament], you have to accept everything that comes with it.

“Not every match can finish exactly on time and results will not always follow what people imagine; that is competitive sport.”
