A relieved Patrick Lam Lap-shun delivered a flawless show jumping round in Thailand on Wednesday to surge from fourth to second and repeat his FEI Asian Championships individual eventing silver medal from 2019.

One place outside the medal positions after the opening dressage on Monday and the cross country on Tuesday, Lam said his biggest goal had been to “jump clear and put the three riders in front of me under a lot of pressure.”

“My horse [Jockey Club Highdown March] is a good jumper, he is experienced and careful and not spooky, so I knew we had a chance,” Lam said.

“When I got on him before the warm-up, he felt fresh, and not stiff from yesterday. That’s how he needs to be for a clear round, so I knew life would be easier for me.”

Lam did not see Alex Hua Tian, the Chinese rider who began the day in third, go into the Pattaya arena straight after him and dislodge his first fence.

“My team told me, so we knew we had an individual medal and the rest was a bonus,” Lam said.
